Imo in Kenya!

Hello, I’m Imogen and I’m in th 9th grade at the Klosterschule Roßleben and currently on an exchange at Brookhouse School in Nairobi, Kenya. I’ll be spending a total of four weeks here. I’m really enjoying my time here and I’ve already learned a lot. I’ll be taking home incredible memories and friendships.
I’m boarding from Monday to Friday and I spend the weekends with my host family. They live here in Nairobi in a beautiful apartment. They gave me a large room with my own balcony, where I have a beautiful view. They welcomed me warmly, and I feel like I’m a part of their family. Thanks to my host family, I’ve been able to truly experience Kenyan culture. They showed me around their beautiful country and shared their home with me. I’ve enjoyed staying with them on the weekends. Their helper makes delicious, traditional Kenyan food, and she has taught me a few dishes. I have eaten so much chapati and ugali that I can’t eat a dish without them now.
The school is also going well, and the girls I share a room with are open and helpful. The teachers are very open-minded and include me in their lessons. This week, there are exams every day for all year groups. I’m using this time to do my own work from home. I even took one exam, in German. It wasn’t challenging for me, but it tested my knowledge. I’ve been enjoying every single minute of my school and boarding experience at Brookhouse.
The students here are social on a different level; they’re very interested and open-minded, and they really inspired me.
What I like about this school is the house system. All students are divided into four houses: Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, or Mara. These houses compete against each other in various competitions. On my first Friday here, I saw all four houses perform a play inspired by the theme „A song that can change everything.“ My house, Amboseli, and I won second place! This house system they have is very beneficial. It makes the different year groups interact and make broader connections.
The school is very beautiful, and what shocked me were the animals that roam freely around campus. There are papios, geese, goats and peacocks. I’ve also seen many animals outside of school, at the National Park and at different conservatory’s. At the Ol Pejeta Conservatory in Nanyuki, I saw zebras, elephants and I even petted and fed a blind rhino. At the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi, I got to feed giraffes, which was a wonderful experience.
I like it here so much that I don’t want to leave Nairobi. It’s the people who make a country and I find that the people I got to meet here have made this experience, one I won’t ever forget. They are the ones that made it so enjoyable, I will be forever grateful for the people.
Time has gone by quickly, and I can’t describe in words how thankful I am that I got to do this exchange. The memories I have made are unforgettable. Kenya will always be a part of me.
